So I am back. I have taken long enough break from seriously concentrating on my work. Truth be know I took a break from it all. This includes writing here on a consistent basis. Now I am back in and I hope to build this blog and gain a reputation for a being one of the most informative film blogs on the internet.

So where am I in my film on sex trafficking and combat veteran issues that I am developing? Well I am in the middle of reading the book Girls Like Us by Rachel Lloyd. It is a great book on the subject of sex trafficking, giving both Lloyd’s own personal experience being trafficked, and stories of girls she has worked with. I have to knock this book out and start the next one. Off the top of my head I have about 11 books and countless articles to consume for this film and then I start writing. Research is so important to me. I feel I have to be an expert on the subject matter I am working on. Plus, I have to get it right in this film. The worst thing would be for someone come up to me and tell me my film got it wrong. I feel it would be a disservice to the subject if I get it wrong. I want it to be as realistic and accurate possible in order to give the viewer an understanding the issues I am talking about in this film. I also want to start a conversation in this country on sex trafficking and combat veteran issues. This is why I a filmmaker. It allows me to talk about subjects I feel are important, and allows me begin a conversation and I want to have with the viewer.

There is a lot of other things going on as well. I wrote about being the unit production manager for a short film. Well I got taken off that project. I will get into that in the future. As they say ‘”all will be revealed.” My partner Ken Anthony, AKA the hardest working man in the Tampa Bay area, is doing well. He acted in 2 different short films this weekend, and he and I will be getting together this week to discuss our projects. We have a lot on our plate and I feel we have some special projects ahead.

Hey all, I hope you all are doing well. As for me, I am hanging in there. Got some painting last week and plan to get a lot more done this week. As far as the film goes last week I got pulled from every direction. I am in a situation where I help a lot people, which has been taking up my time. Grrrrr. This is also why I didn’t get to write last week. But time management is always going to be an issue for you. Fear not though there is a lot of helpful articles out there for you to read.

What else is going on? I was contacted by an actress that I have followed for years contacted me about my feature film an well as my idea for a TV series. She is out in LA and is working with some producers. We will see what happens. So I really need to bust my ass and get these projects done.

Quick note on 27 Oct 2015

One of the things I am going to start doing here, is curate good reading material for you guys. There is so ,much information out there that it can be hard to filter through the noise. One website you should be going to is Brainpickings.org. It is one of the smartest websites on the web, and is especially great for those who are in the creative fields and for those who look for a better and a better way of living. It is such a good site that the Library of Congress archives Brainpickings’ post due to their cultural relevance.

As far as the film development goes I finished up the book Walking Prey by Holly Austin Smith and am about to finish up The Untold War by Nancy Sherman. I also started reading a PDF by Shared Hope International on mirror sex trafficking. My goal is to get through that and finish 3 other books. One of the good things about my research is that now that I am working with the Veteran’s Mental Health Advocacy Council, all these books help me be a much better advocate because I am becoming much more knowledgeable on PTSD and Moral Injury.

I also have to find some time to paint; which is a time management issue. Which we all have.

Hey world!!!! So I took a little break from everything. I think it did me some good. I am ready to get back to work on the film, filmmaking and this blog which discusses both those things. I am fortunate enough to have a friend, Sue Lee, who got me a copy of Final Draft 9, so I can start writing scripts. I also have some projects that I am working on.

I found some good books on writing and storytelling: one is by John Truby called The Anatomy of Story, 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller. Other one is by Anne Lamott called Bird by Bird, Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Both I picked up on the website Thriftbooks.com; which is a great site to pick up books on filmmaking. Seriously, you should pick up as many books on film and filmmaking as you can. This includes film criticism. I have picked up a lot of them. Also there is a local, here in Tampa, used book and record store called Mojo’s Books and Music. I even found a copy of Mark T. Conrad’s book The Philosophy of Film Noir, and I recently picked a pick up “Light Motives” German Popular Film in Perspective, edited by Randall Halle and Margret McCarthy.

Agents, Filmmaking, Producing

How to find an agent.

I was at the website Producer Founder and came across these two blog post on finding an agent. The firsts one is called 3 Things to Prepare Before Calling a Hollywood Agent. Very common sense things. First and foremost a great script. As I have said in the past 80% of good film is the script. Them after that is doing your research on actors and then figuring out what you can afford to pay them.

Then the second blog post, How to Talk to Agents About Your Movie, is about contacting agents and how you should go about doing that. It is common sense, be professional and be nice. Don’t be pushy and don’t waist their time. If you get a no from them, move on.

The quick update of 8 June 15

So I haven’t been on here is a while. Since March I think. Anyways, here is what is going on, I had stopped working on film for a while, but now I am back at it. I am back to researching and developing my film on sexual violence and combat veteran issues, as well as starting to do character bio’s. I am also planning my production company that I want to start when the screenplay is finished and it is time to raise capital to make it.

I am also going to be working on a some ideas for series that will be either for TV or the web. If I do a web series, it is with the hope that it does well enough to gain the attention of a network. Hi HBO. I heart you. I have a few ideas in mind, one of which is set here in Tampa and uses the Tampa Bay and its people as a back drop. Tampa has a great music and art scene. As far as the film scene goes it lacks desperately. You have a lot of monkeys with cameras running around making substandard films. But, thankfully, there are a few talented people making interesting, quality work.

I also have started to paint again. What got me going again is that I was commissioned to do a piece. This has gotten back to painting a series of paintings. I plan on having enough work done to be in a show in about 4 to 6 months as well as having the feature written and the production company ready to go. Once I have this all ready to go I plan on putting this out to the media. And those people who know what happened regrading the film on sexual violence and the ordeal I suffered know that this will be a big deal.

Hey new followers.

Hello to all my new followers. I am Tim from Tampa , Fl. I am a filmmaker and creator of content, and multidisciplinary artist. I feel you shouldn’t limit yourself creatively, for it kills chances to create and make inroads with other creative people that will only make you better. Creativity breeds more creativity. Like the my blogs name indicates, this is my journey into film. As I learn I will share with you. I want to help others and by me sharing with you what I know, and by getting your feedback I too shall learn and grow. This is also my journey into my creative endeavors.

So about me, I am a retired United States Paratrooper who served in the 82nd Airborne Division. I was a team leader who who was heading to Special Forces and Ranger School until I broke my back on a jump in May 94. In filmmaking I am a producer, director, writer and act when asked. I am a natural born leader and I like having some control over the projects I am involved with; which is why I love producing. I have a background in fine art photography and sculpting and when I realized that I was never going to go to film school I decided to just jump in and teach myself. Today there is so much information online and in books you can teach yourself. I taught myself how to drive and swim, so filmmaking was no big deal.

My current projects are: developing a feature film dealing with sex trafficking and combat veteran issues, a series that I would like to shoot in Tampa, working with 2 talented artist that I plan to curate their shows. I also like writing about a wide range of topics: film and art, politics and social issues, and about my personal life just for fun.

The film I am developing on sex trafficking and combat veteran issues which are near and dear to my heart. This film idea started in 2011, when I decided I was going to take on the of sexual violence as a film. I had seen the work of a friend who was a sexual violence advocate, and believed it was something I should make a a film about. I teamed up with the talented writer Semone Fournillier and she produced a first draft of a script. Her screenplay dealt with rape, underage prostitution and pedophilia. I did a lot research on these subjects and gained a lot of knowledge about these various topics. While I was doing research, I got into a lot of trouble. I was trying to do the right thing and went completely about it the wrong way and so I am paying a price for my stupidity. Still non the less, I am committed to doing a film on sexual violence, which has now evolved to sex trafficking; which I find to be the worst of all sexual violence acts. It is forced rape for profit, plan and simple.

Since I am veteran, veteran issues are near and dear to my heart. I’m making a film that deals with veterans who actually did the fighting and killing. Those are the guys I really care about. I found a way to discuss both topics in one film. My goals for this film are simple: I want to make a huge impact with this film. I want to open peoples eyes and educate them. Mu hope for this film is it makes a difference and make a change.

Sex Trafficking Documentary.

Rebecca Dharmapalan and Zoë Simone are filmmakers from Oakland California who have made a short documentary called International Boulevard, which is about child sex trafficking in the Oakland area. It won first place at the 2013 Girls Impact the World Film Festival. It is a damn good short documentary, and I strongly recommend that you take the time to watch it.

I am happy to see that these women have taken on this subject. It is epidemic in this country. Girls 10 and younger are subjected to become prostitutes, though the average age is between 12 and 14. The sad part is that it is in your backyard. I live in Tampa, Fl which has the highest rate of child prostitution in the State. Fortunately, we have safe harbor laws that recognizes that child prostitutes are not criminals but victims and are treated as such. I’ll get into that more.

I am taking on this subject in the feature film I am developing. My goal is to make an impact and show the brutal realities of sex trafficking. Right now I am doing research for it, and am in the middle on Holly Austin Smith’s book Walking Prey, How America’s youth are vulnerable to sex slavery. It is a powerful and insightful book that I suggest you read. It will open your eyes.
